How to Measure Linear Footage for a Handrail or Railing
What You Need
- Tape measure
Step 1: Measure Along the Railing Path
- Place the tape measure where the handrail will go.
- Measure straight along the wall, stairs, or edge.
- On stairs, measure along the slope, not straight up and down.
Step 2: Add All Lengths Together
- Measure each section separately.
- Add them together for total linear feet.
👉 Example:
6 ft + 8 ft + 4 ft = 18 linear feet
Step 3: Round Your Number
- Round to the nearest inch or half-foot.
👉 Example:
12 ft 3 in ≈ 12.5 linear feet
Step 4: Send Us the Total
- Just send the total linear footage in your quote request.
- Photos help but are optional.
